Question
hi
i just have a question about my adult guppies..
my guppies keep getting sucked onto the filter. they don't get sucked up it..just onto it and they cant swim off it, if i see them on it i take them off but their tails are usually chopped up a bit so they die within a day anyway. i have lost quite a few guppies this way and i don't want them to keep dying. i have tried putting a stocking around the bottom of the filter where everything gets sucked up but all the food etc kept getting caught on it and it was too much of a hassel having to replace it everyday. do you know of any other ways i can fix the problem? and if this is happening to fully grown guppies, my fry (who will be leaving the breeder net soon) and neon tetras wont stand a chance.(they are in the tank aswell + a bristle nose catfish) any help you have is appreciated.. also if you know of anyone who has ideas, please let me know so i can ask them too
please reply to megan_rox99@hotmail.com
thanks

Answer
It's a hard thing to keep an eye on the fish all the time i know. I was having this problem and as far as the babies go.. there's not much you can do. When breeders breed babies they usually have a sponge filter for the purpose they dont get sucked up into anything. There is no safe measure around that.

AS far as the adults go, you can get attachments that are bigger then the one you have which suckup alot more water from alot more space making the suction not as strong. Your LFS might have somthing like that. You can put an attachment over the inlet aswell (such as a guard from a heater) Or you could just try to turn the power level down... thus not filtering as much but it all depends on how much suction you want. those are some of my recommendations.
