Question
QUESTION: Hi I have a 50 gallon tank 2 yrs old housing 4 parrots and 2 goldfish,2 Tiger wharf , 1 angel and 3 bala sharks. Just today the parrots attacked one goldfish in the right eye and have damaged it beyond repair/heal. Eye is also bleeding as the parrots were constantly attacking it at the time i noticed the attack.
I have separated the gold into a bucket of water(3 gallons approx.).I have aquarium salt..how much should i add per gallon to shorten the healing process.
Kindly guide on future course of action.

ANSWER: Hi Jagpreet

Goldfish don't go well with aquarium salt, but a teaspoon for your bucket would be OK. Also, adding a slime coat enhancer/healing agent will help, such as Stress Coat.

You should NEVER keep Goldfish with other aggressive fish! Your Cichlids, Bala Sharks, and Angel are tropical fish, meaning they need temperatures of 75+, by using a heater. Goldfish WILL NOT stand that temperature! They become extremely uncomfortable at temperature of 70F or above. Goldfish need to be kept in a separate aquarium, or a pond. Goldfish cannot be kept with tropicals. They will become stressed, and die shortly after.

Good Luck, and I hope your Goldfish recovers!

QUESTION: Sir, I am extremely thankful to you for ur prompt response. I have segregated her into a 3 gallon bucket with air bubbles to support. She had her food(pellets) just fine. The Blood was like ours and it has stopped. I am now more worried about any bacterial or fungal infection it may contract during the healing process. Do i mix her with other g/f's in my aunt's tank 15 gallon tank or shall i wait for another 15 days before doing so. Sumone just suggested melafix for treating her in isolation. In the meanwhile I will definitely try to relocate the healthy one tomorrow evening into my aunt's 15 gallon tank.
How do i move forward ... is now what i am worried about.

Answer
Hi Jagpreet,

It's very common for cuts to be infected by bacteria. I would recommend that you medicate his bucket as a preventative measure, with an anti-bacterial medication at half dose. The half-dose applies to the more stronger medications (more effective), such as Maracyn, my personal favorite. Melafix could be used, of course, because it treats bacterial infections as well. If you already have Melafix, or another anti-bacterial medication, then don't hesitate to use it.

Changing 20% of the bucket's water every day will help, as well.

P.S. There's no need to call me "Sir"

Good Luck, and I hope your goldfish recovers!
