Question
My two pet betta fish are currently in an about 1 gallon tank seperated by a divider. I would really like to upgrade them to a five gallon tank. Do you have any idea where I can purcahse a five gallon tank with a divider or at least just the divider itself that will fit a 5 gallon tank?

Answer
Hi Julia,

It's nice to hear that you're making a good decision and getting a bigger tank for your two Bettas. Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons for two. It's terrible (but common) to see people keeping them in tiny bowls with no filters. They often die at a young age this way.

Sometimes, you can get special 5-gallon aquariums with a built in divider. Look for kits marked as 'Betta Kit', or similar. Watch out, there are tiny little 1/2 gallon tanks sold as Betta kits too!

I would recommend that you get a normal 5 gallon aquarium kit, that comes with a filter and lighting. Then, you can purchase a plastic aquarium divider separately. My favorite pick for the 5 gallon aquarium would be Marineland's 5 gallon kit. It includes a great filter, and lighting. These kits are available at stores like Petco and PetSmart (Canada & USA). Aquarium dividers would be found at the same stores. If you live in Europe, South America, Asia, or Australia, then these or similar products would be found at your local fish store. Of course, you can also order online.

Remember to get a small heater for your tank (25W). Bettas are tropical fish, and they need temperatures (water temp, not air) of 73-78F.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
