Question
In the outdoor pond that my Dad and I care for we have three comets. We just got 15 more fish to put in the upper and lower pond and I saw three baby fish 1 about 1 inch long and the other two about 2 inches long. We also spotted a frog in the pond, and I wondered if the fish we bought 6 comets about 3 inches long and 6 shubunkins about 8 inches long and three ittle shubunkins about 6 inches long will eat the baby comets. Also how many babies approx. are there in the pond?

Answer
Dear Jennifer,
I'm glad to hear your Pond is is so enjoyable for you and what's better? A frog has found your pond a good habitat to live, he will probably attract a mate and you may have tadpoles in your pond before long, that's how it goes all during the spring/summer year around here. ;-)

Your Comets and Shubunkins will certainly try to eat any goldfish fry they can swallow. But many times they leave young fish alone which are in the range of 1-2 inches. So the three baby comets should be OK, they've got along well this far. It seems to happen when goldfish spawn in ponds that many of the eggs or fry get eaten and cut down to only a few survivors from one spawn. One way you could have more babies is to watch for the spawning (which is hard though) and search for eggs (which can be in the plants) once the goldfish have finished spawning and raise them yourself. Goldfish spawns can vary, but good size females can produce anywhere from 500-1000 eggs per spawning! You may have many other babies you haven't seen yet in your lovely pond.

I really hope this helps! The fact that your goldfish have spawned is a wonderful sign that your goldfish are well-cared for and happy!

Best wishes as always,
Karen~
