Fighting Female Bettas

Question
I put two youngster female bettas in a 5 gallon tank.  I noticed  damage to their skin and it was obvious they had been fighting.  I put four babies in a 5 gallon tank and they got along beautifully.  The fish person at the pet store said all four of my females would get along after they got the same size.  Is this true?  I'm perplexed by this behavior and am wondering what to do about them.  I have all of them in their own bowl for now. Will I ever be able to put them together.  They are all veil tail bettas and I've never seen them be aggressive before. What do you think?

Answer
Marie,

If the females were born at the same time from the same mom and dad then yes they can be put in the same tank. A lot has to do with the fish. What works for some won't work for others. I have females that got a long for awhile and then changed and had to be separated. They are, after all, Siamese Fighting Fish. What the person at the pet store told you is absolutely incorrect. Most big pet store employees no nothing about fish. They need to come out of the bowls and placed in their own 5 gallon tank. Remember that they are tropical and need heated water between 80 and 82 degrees. You might be able to put them together but I wouldn't count on it. I have 4 females that have to be in their own tanks. You can try putting the bowls next to each other so the girls can see each other. Keep them like that for awhile and then try to put them together. When you do this you have to be there to watch them the whole time to be able to separate them if trouble starts. If you don't you might wake up to a dead fish. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.
