Beta Fish and algae

Question
I have my beta fish in a 5 gallon tank with live and plastic plants. The last two months the tanks had grown algae. I have a filter and light and it hasn't seem to bother him. Is this a concern and if so what should I do? I clean bowl every month and add a water conditioner.I didn't realize that Azul slept so soundly. I had to leave the house at 4:30 am which is very early for me and when I put the light on to feed him I thought he died. It took him a good 5 minutes to get the sleep out of his eyes!

Answer
Algae is caused by free radicals in the water. You can get rid of these with water changes.

You must do at least 50% water changes twice monthly, and do NOT do a full tank clean, ever under any circumstances. Make sure there is always water and a fish in the tank.

If it still doesn't go away, throw a blanket over the tank and turn off all lights. Make sure absolutely NO light gets to the tank for 4 days, and the algae should die off and rot away.
