Question
QUESTION: Hello
if i put my betta fry in my backyard pond with my goldfish will the goldfish eat
the betta fry?

Thanks!!

ANSWER: Hi Emily,
Sorry to say this, but I'm quite certain the goldfish will eat the betta fry.

But that's a really good idea if the betta fry could have their own little established pond with no big fish that would eat them. That way they'd find lots of little tiny critters/algae to eat and the sunshine always makes fish very healthy.

I hope this helps!

QUESTION: Do you know what containers would be good to put the betta fry in that arent
too expensive?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi,
Well, when they are just fry you can keep them together in an inexpensive 10-gallon from walmart. Its best if they have a little sponge filter going and make sure their water doesn't get cold. If your house temperature stays decent then this may not be such an issue. A tank is excellent since you can observe their growth really well and check them for any possible developing sickness. Plus when doing tank cleaning with the airline tubing, you can easily watch for and avoid the sometimes curious fry from getting siphoned up (if they do they can be safely returned back to the tank) With any other container either the visibility inside it won't be that good or you'll only have the top view of the babies.

HOWEVER, I have raised a large group of newly hatched angelfish from eggs in a 1 gallon container with just an airstone for aeration and circulation, turn this off when the babies are fed their food. But I would also clean the tank to around 50% every day using a length of airline tubing to siphon waste and uneaten food. Always make sure the replacement water is equal in temp or just a tiny bit warmer than the fry tank and is had plenty of water conditioner.

I do advise for you to move the babies out as soon as you can when they grow larger and start to really explore around the tank. A ten-gallon again is perfect. Be careful of ammonia problems always and try to keep the air above the water surface humid which is vital for the baby betta's developing labyrinths.
