Cloudy tank!

Question
I have a 1300 gallon system with a range of zebra cichlids to blushing tetras to opaline gouramis and everything in between (all in seperate tanks).  I routinely treat the system with copper sulfate pentahyrdrate to avoid any external parasites from being a problem.  My filtration system is undergravels as well as an overflow system with a 150 gallon vat that recycles along with 10-20% water changes daily.  Today when I added copper sulfate pentahyrdate to my system (first time in a few months) the entire system started to turn white and got cloudy.  Throughout the entire system I have no medication, no dechlorinators, and no chemicals all together.  What might it be?

Answer
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your letter. You are way ahead of me in this hobby. You are serious. 1300 is a lot of water.
I don't know what could cause the cloudiness. I'm not sure that you need all that copper sulfate pentahyrdate. Maybe it built up in the system? It could have reached a tipping point of some sort. Do you use bottled water? If you're using tap water, maybe it interacted with something in the tap water.
Maybe it's a sign to reduce the chemical treatments and let nature keep the parasites out. Do you ever use Cycle (organic biology)? I recommend that instead of chemical treatments.
At my site I have posted instructions for wholistic aquarium care.

Since I don't have a difinitive answer, keep searching. Aquarium care is a mysterious hobby. It's like golf. You think you've really got it, then it throws you for a loop.
Best to you. Write back if you want to discuss further.
