fish compatibility with plecos

Question
Hi Ron.  I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank.  I have a pleco (about 5" long) and HAD 2 African Cichlids, as of last week.  One of the Cichlids was very territorial.  He would chase and bite the other one.  The pleco does his own thing.  I would like to get another fish for my tank (since the cichlids have passed, NOT due to illness)... I want to know what types of fish will be compatible with the pleco and especially given the size of the tank and pleco in general.

Answer
Hi Char,
Fortunately, plecos get along with most fish. This is mostly because plecos do their own thing and ignore other fish and most other fish ignore plecos.  So, the pleco shouldn't be a factor in choosing new tankmates.

You do want to figure in the size of the tank in that many cichlids grow too large for a 10 gallon tank.  You should strongly consider a cichlid like the convict cichlid.  A single convict would generally really enjoy a 10 gallon tank.   Other small cichlids, like Anomalochromis thomasi, or the kribensis, or rams would be good choices.
