Question
Hi there I would like an expert opinion on how to set up a tropical fish tank properly as I want my fish to last. I know that I have to put the water treatment in then leave it till it circulates through the filter and all water, I want to know when the best time to put my fish in? The tank is set up and ready to go, just want to make sure it is done right. I know how many fish are aloud in my tank to be happy and healthy, just the time I have to leave the treatment in the water circulating before I even think of getting the fish.

Answer
Hi Leanne,
You must let your water cycle for about 4-6 weeks before adding a fish to your tank.  Add water that has evaporated.  To cycle your water properly you will need a used sponge that fits your filter.  Buy one at your pet store, do not rinse it, squeeze off the access water, and put it directly into your filter.  Ask the manager for a handful of used gravel from one of his established tanks.  Put it directly into your tank, do not wash it.  This will give your water good bacteria.  After one month, check your water.  It should have no ammonia, no nitrites, and nitrates should be low.  If your water still has ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, let it run adding water that evaporates until your water has the right chemistry.  It sometimes happens that your ammonia level is safe, your nitrite level is safe, but your nitrates may be high.  If this should happen, do 10% water changes everyday until you get your nitrates down.
When everything is perfect, you can then add fish, but do not add them all at once.  Adding them all at once would cause death, and change your water chemistry.  Add them slowly, and wait one week, add 2, and wait another week, and so on.
Do 25% water changes every week after you have fish in your tank.
I hope this helps
