eye problem in black lace cat fish

Question
QUESTION: This fish has what looks like "yellowish" crystals on top of it's eye in the very center.  Not covering the entire eye...  It is raised about 1/16th or more from the surface of the outside of the eye.  I have treated with Melafix & Furan-2.  I cut short the treatment of Furan-2 due to the fact that i didn't have a proper hospital tank, and the fish couldn't move around much.....  Nothing seemed to change the appearance of what's on the eye. Help...

Thanks for your input...

Kris

QUESTION: Hi Will,

I hope this picture is clear enough for you to see what is going on with
this fish.

Thanks,

ANSWER: Hi,
Its an abrasive eye fungus, linked to poor water conditions or the wrong water conditions.

Your tank looks very clean, but those catfish like a pH of 8.0 or higher with hard water. If the water is too soft or acidic, thats your problem.

QUESTION: i will get the water tested....i recently started using a double filter instead of one filter and my question is, if i clear up to water problem, will the eye problem go away or do i need to buy medicine to treat the eye fungus?  And what would you prescribe?

Thanks again...i REALLY appreciate it.  I like this particular fish...it is my favorite in the tank.

Answer
Hi,
The filter change may actually be the cause. The change most likely destroyed the eco system and started it over again. I'm guessing you changed the filter in between 2 and 4 weeks ago for it to be having this effect?

If your water chemistry checks out, do a 25% water change every 3-4 days for about 10 days. Eye fungus is very easy to treat and usually goes away by its self, but this will help the process. Your fish should be able to see just as well as before once this clears.

There are also procedures as drastic as surgery to fix this, but they are very risky and not really worth it. You would mainly use this if the fungus appeared inside the fishes eye.
