Question
QUESTION: Hello Lynda ! My parrots and gourami are fine thank god ! Now to restock the tank.. Pet shops assured it is safe.. Now I have a 40gallon and preferbly I would like 3 more gouramis? They are bought fairly small.. Erm also some more colourful fish? Ideas? And I would like it to the max haha :) thanks

ANSWER: Hi Alex,
Parrots should be kept with non aggressive fish.  A school of medium size tetras, or danios would be a choice you can make.  If you go with Gouramis, make sure you buy them the same sex, but it would be better to buy some other fish.  Female platies are very colourful, and would also be a choice.  One Angel fish could also be added.  Be careful not to overstock your tank.  Overstocked tanks will bring disease to your fish.  You could add one angel fish, 4 female platies, 4 cory catfish, and a school of dwarf danios.  This would be your limit.  Remember that the Parrot fish does grow quite big, and that one Angel fish needs 10 gallons of water all to themselves.
I hope this helps

QUESTION: Hello lynda :) your suggestions are great but the pet shop wanted our parrot fish.. So now we hav 1 gold gourami.. I definatrly want 1 sunset gourami 1 pearl gourami and 1 blue gourami.. What can I add towards that? Platies are nice but small.. Would a Betta be able to go in? And maybe some neon rainbows there dwarf I think.. And a shoal suggest please :) thanks

Answer
Hi Alex,
A betta would not do well.  Bettas are loners, and few fish can be added with a betta.  Bettas usually get along with platys, cory catfish, Otocinclus, neons, ghost shrimp, and even then, nothing guarantees that the betta will get along.  It all depends on the betta's personality.
The gouramis are slow swimming so you must find fish that are slow too.  No danios, or fish like that.
The blue spot Gourami may be aggressive towards smaller fish as he gets older.  This is not always the case, but I thought I would let you know.
The Moonlight Gourami is very quiet, and beautiful, the little powder blue gourami is also a beauty, dwarf gouramis, and honey gouramis are also a nice addition.  Adding floating plants with gouramis is a must, and lots of silk or real plants in the tank are needed.  If you stick with small gouramis you could add 12-14 neon tetras, a school of glowlight tetras are also very nice ( about 8-10 glowlights)  Always get peaceful fish with gouramis.  You can add 6 little cory catfish to any mix that you make.  They are cute, play together, and are fun to watch.
If you go with bigger gouramis,  the congo tetra is also a beauty, and should be kept in groups of at least 4 -6.
A tank filled with gouramis is beautiful to see, and Congo Tetras are beautiful.  The Rainbow fish are also quiet, and peaceful, also live in groups, 1 male to 2-3 females.
If you go with the Congo Tetra, rainbows, then you can add any gourami you like, except for the betta, and paradise fish.
I hope this helps.
