finches in classroom

Question
We have three shaft-tailed finches that we are considering giving to a neighbor for her Pre-Kindergarten classroom.  My main concern is how we make sure they are well fed and watered over the weekend.  Are there any suggestions you can give for making sure they are okay for two days without direct care -- or is that even possible?

Answer
I highly doubt that that's even possible. They would need to be taken home for the two days. Obviously young children are ill equipped to care for such little animals. The parents wouldn't be much better.
The only thing I can think of is for the teacher to take the birds home over the weekend (and possibly every night). One thing that worries me is that this will stress out the birds too much. These are little finches and can die quite easily from stress. Finches would be best for a classroom with older children (I would guess grades 4-6 would be good). Prekindergarten is just too young for finches.
If your neighbor really wants a pet for the class, I would suggest fish. They are easier to are for and as long the kids don't tap the glass, the fish should be good for kids.
