Just born finches

I have a second batch of baby finches that were recently born in my fern (2-3 days old) I hadn't seen the parents for a while so I got on a ladder to make sure they were still alive (the first batch hadn't survived and I noticed that because the parents hadn't been around for awhile).  I'm concerned now because I saw the parents come right after I peeked and they haven't returned for about a half hour.  Are they detecting my scent and not returning to the nest?  Is it normal for them to not always be in the nest when they are very young?

That is not normal at all. At all times at least one parent is in the nest (the female during the day and the male during the night). I would keep an eye on them to see if they return to their babies (they just may) but if they haven't by the end of the day then the babies have been abandoned. If that happens you will have a choice to make. You can either let the babies die or raise them yourself
