Female birds of any species can still lay eggs; it is like the ovulation cycle in humans. Female birds usually need some sort of stimulation for this to occur...they might be able to see or hear males, they might take note of the lengthening days in spring, they might be petted a certain way that stimulates egg laying.
You do not need a male to stimulate a female into laying eggs; you only need a male to fertilize the eggs before the hard shell is formed on it inside the female.
