tramatic stress after a dog attack with my Grey

Question
In a horrifying accident, my oldest female Grey (12 years old) was attacked by a mini doxie i had adopted a week before... it was horrible... there are no words to describe it... in my total panic, I managed to call our University Vet School, which is her vet, and rushed her 15 miles to the vet school.  It is a total miracle to say that she not only lived, but is home 2 days later.  Even the vets are shocked.  Her injuries are a bruised lung, bruised wing, one tooth pierce under her wing and bad injuries to her back.. superficial.. loss of feathers... I managed to get my hands in the dogs mouth and keep it from crushing her and most injuries happened to me.  She came home today, quite animated and happy in the car.. till she got home.. and then started to shake.  She has not eaten yet.. but has started to groom herself and is just sitting quietly.  She wants to be talked to.. but it is obvious she does not want to come out.

Now.. the adopted dog is gone and will not be back. I found it a new home.  She may not really know that yet.  I have a huge cage for both my greys that can be divided and is for now to keep her safe and he has kissed her through the bars and called out to her when she came home.  She sat alone on her play stand for a few hours then finally got on my hand and since she seemed to want to be alone, I put her in her cage and talked quietly to her.  She does not want to come out.  I know I am under alot of fear and stress myself.. I can only imagine what she is under.  She is not being mean.. just quiet.  She is on pain meds and antibiotics.  I am so thankful beyond words that she lived and is home with me an d her prognosis is very positive.

My insides tell me to give her room... let her gain trust in the environment again.  Let her rest.  Let her understand she is ok.....

Is there anything else I can do to help her?  I hope she will come out tomorrow so I can give her the meds she needs... none of this is normal for her.  She is my baby.  But then, she has been through a horrible thing and has lived.

How can I help her to get over the shock.  The vets feel medically she is doing so well.  And like I said, she was very animated in the car.. it was after we got home... and I am sure the memories hit her...

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Rhonda

Answer
Rhonda,

What a wonderful bird mom you are!  You have done all the right things.  Remember...she has some very bad memories of the inside of your house.  She will soon learn that she has nothing to fear anymore.  It takes time for birds to get over these sorts of traumatic events; they are such intelligent beings.

Please let me know how she is doing.  I care.
