Question
I am looking for a bird that is not very expensive, trainable and is friendly for a house pet.

Answer
When deciding on a species of bird to adopt there is a lot of decisions and allowences that must be considered.

1. Time to spend with the bird. When dealing with hookbills (parakeet-macaw) you must cosider how much time you can spend with the bird out of cage everyday. If you work 12 hours a day, I would not recommend getting any species of hookbill. These birds need out of cage time throughout the day, attention, handling and a schedule in order to keep tame and not neglect them.

2. Space: How much space do you have for a cage, playstand, and other supplies?

3. Diet: Hookbills require a varied diet of a lot of vegetables and fruit, a nut and seed mix(no sunflower seeds) , PELLET, and healthy treats and snacks.

4. Cage size: If you decide on a hookbill you will be purchasing a large cage (hopefully) and providing the bird with many different sized perches and many toys. The overall cost of toy and perch replacement should also be taken into consideration.

Please investigate the diet requirements for each individual species you are interested in adopting.

If you have the time and are still interested in adopting a bird, I would purchase a sweet baby cockatiel from a breeder. You may find some in your area on birdbreeder.com. Be careful of local ads for birds for sale as the birds sold are usually not tame. Taking in an untame bird can be a challenge for a normal person who is looking for a pet. Please investigate the species diet, cage requirements, perch sizes and types needed. I hope this helps you make a decision.
