Question
hi, i have just purchased a miniature yearling colt and was thinking of doing show hunter with him. i no he is still to young but my questions are what is involved in show hunter like what do i have to do and could you give some idea of what to do because i have never done it before. and also what is the best age to start training him? thanks Nikita

Answer
Hi Nikita-
Sorry for the delay in answering your question- for some reason it didn't come through. There are many good books and videos on the subject but at this age, you really only need to work with him on leading, ground manners maybe some basic trail stuff (going over tarps and ground poles) to make him (and you) more confident. Jumping training should not occur until they are at least 3 years old so they don't do damage to their legs. But, there are plenty of other events you can participate in now until he's ready for that. Halter classes, color classes (where you basically just need to have him lead, stop and stand) are good for getting him used to being transported as well as getting him (and you) used to the whole showing thing. Work with him frequently for short periods of time and by all means, invest in some good books and/or videos to help you along your path. See if there's a local Miniature Horse Association near you where you can attend and observe some shows as well as meeting some local trainers who can help you out. Have fun with him and build an early foundation for more extensive trainig later. Hope this helps. Best, Toni
