Question
We rescued a 3 year old mini about 4 weeks ago. She trailered home fine and was sweet when she arrived home. My 8 year old daughter lead her, although she needs work on leading, generally speaking did "ok" After about two weeks I started to lead her and begin basic(very basic) lunging but what I noticed is that she will not lead to the left. She will jump high in the air and spin around every time, buck and throw her head. The next time I went out she backed her butt up while I was feeding her in the stall and kicked me. I firmly said "no kick" but every time I feed her or go near her she stops what ever she's doing and backs up to kick me. I don't know what happed in the last two weeks but surely she can't still be mad about our one 10 min lesson. She does not do it to my daughter, thank goodness. I don't know the history of this little girl as far as training. She will lead somewhat but needs lots more lessons. I know horses have preferred left or right but this girl will not budge!

Answer
Hi Susan-

Thanks for your questions(s). This is a tough one. I'm inclined to think that she may have or had an injury that caused her not to want to do that way. You may need to get a vet to check her over to rule out an injury. Once you rule that out you will have to start working her in that direction a little at a time starting with just leading and praising her extravagantly. I tend to think the kicking thing is not related to the lunging issue. As far as kicking- most horses kick for one of 2 reasons. They either feel threatened or they are trying to exert their domination. Either way, you cannot put up with it. When I have had a horse that does that, I have followed a loud NO with a physical correction such as a smart snap with a crop on her hind end if just NO doesn't work. If a behavior is uncomfortable for them, they will usually quit it with a little repetition.  I hope this helps. 4 weeks is not a long time. She may still be trying to "find her place" so you need to set her straight soon. Best of luck and keep up the good work, Toni
