Question
QUESTION: hi, I have a male glider and I have a question, is it possible to neuter your male glider by yourself? I have herd about people tieing a string or dental floss above the scrotal sac and the testicals rot off after 7-10 days.
Im not anywhere near a vet (I would have to fly somewhere ot get to one) and I dont want my glider to breed with his sister, also I really cant afford flying all the way to a proper vet because it would cost around 700$ because I would have to ship the glider overseas and I would have to pay my ticket along with the nutering.

please let me know if neutering your glider youself is an unsafe practice.

ANSWER: Yikes!  Not only is it very unsafe, but it would be extremely painful!  Please, don't even think about doing it!  Do you know someone who might want to trade gliders with you?  I did that with a brother/sister that I had a while ago.  It worked out wonderfully.

QUESTION: yeah I wasnet going to do it because my friend is the one who suggested it.
'i cant find any suggies that i could swap with my boy, i would have to order mine online if I really had to get them swapped. If they were to inbreed what could happen to the joey and what are the odds, im not going to let them breed im just curious.

Answer
I'm not a geneticist.  However, I do know that inbreeding is not recommended because organisms need genetic diversity.  If related animals breed, eventually all the bad genetic defects come to bear on the offspring.  Defects can come in many forms: lack of or extra limbs, blindness, internal disorders, etc.  I don't know about the chances of having defects, but it is illegal for humans to inbreed.  Are our sugar gliders less important?  In my opinion, if mating has already taken place, well, take your chances.  Otherwise, please either have the male neutered, or separate them.

Good luck.  Please keep me informed.
