Question
I have two m/f pais of gliders. One is 1.5 the other is 9 months. They were both mating throughout the day and last night. My thought are both females are probably pregnant. Am I correct? How long are they pregnant? When should I increase protein in their diet? Thank you.

Answer
Renee,

Well, congratulations (maybe)!  It's hard to know if gliders are pregnant.  The younger pair are a little young, but it's possible.  I would go ahead and increase the protein and calcium anyway.  It certainly won't hurt.

Sugar Glider reproduction is fascinating.  A female can be taking care of three sets of babies at once:  one in the womb, one in the pouch, and one nursing.  Her body produces the proper nourishment for each group.  So, you don't need to worry about weaning the other joeys.  Happy Day!

The females will be pregnant for a very short time, then the little joey, about the size of cooked rice, will crawl into the pouch.  You won't actually know there is a baby until you see a little lump on one or both sides of the female's belly.  When the joey is ready to emerge, you will see tiny hands, feet, or tails coming out of the pouch.  It is very exciting!
