Question
We live in Garland TX and we have had sugargliders for 2 years and this has never happened, but one of  our sugargliders (a male) got this foot caught in string from his bedding and we think he has lost use of his foot. He keeps it up next to his body and does not use it. We are having a hard time getting all of the string off. My questions are do we need to get an e-collar for this glider to prevent him from chewing when we get all the string off and do we need to have a vet amputate the foot? Also, will this glider die from this? Should we separate him from all the other gliders? We have 6 other gliders and some seem to be checking out the foot. We want to do everything we can to prevent this and all our gliders from dieing. We just need to know what to do for this glider. We checked the rest of the gliders and the male is the only one that got caught in the string. He seems to be doing good otherwise. He is eating well and still moving around the cage.I am looking for a vet to seem him. If you can would you please give me the sight for the e-collar if we need it. Any and all help you can give us would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance,

Answer
Hello,

I have had this happen before.  Most likely he will be okay.  I am not a veterinarian, and my advice cannot take the place of a visit to the vet.  Only a vet can answer the most important questions.

First of all, make sure he doesn't chew on the injured foot.  Watch him carefully while someone begins making an e-collar for him. Here is the link:  http://www.suzsugargliders.com/ecollar.htm  Now, get some antibiotic ointment and or cleanser from the drugstore.  Clean the wound and put on ointment.  You should keep him separated from the others until the foot heals.  Watch to see if he begins using the foot. I hope this helps.  Good luck, please keep me informed.
