Question

male boa at the front
i have a male and female pastel boa, brother and sister about 5 months old but the male has had a problem with eating, when he was born his food sack was half out and then wouldnt eat for 4 months, he was given to me as i have been keeping him alive through force feeding 1st liquidised mice through seringe to slowly get him use to it, then whole small pups every 4 days, he has put on weight and has had his 1st shed which i had to soak everyday then help peel his skin off as it was so thick, i just think that he is the runt of the litter and would it be kinder on him if i had him put to sleep as i think he may never eat normally and may need help with his sheds everytime and as an adult boa it could become quite a challenge, if you could help me on what i should do that would be good as he is lovely and i also wanted to breed him if he gets better or do you think he could have a genetic problem which he could pass on to his babys? please please help ill attach a picture as he has a wierd shape head. Jo

Answer
Hi Jo,

Really its up to you whether you want to stick with him and help him through or just put him to sleep.

i would keep trying with the food. a whole pup every 4 days isnt that bad for a baby boa. if you can increase the food a bit as he gets better with feeding, he'll be fine. as you said, he has put on some weight, which is a good sign. the sheds will more than likely improve as he begins to feed better. the bad shed was probably due to the fact that he lost out on the nutrients and liquids from his eggsack.

he does have a weird shaped head, but that makes him unique =P he has stuning markings on his tail as well. chances are he did'nt fare so well in the mother's womb as the rest which left him with some birth defects, however these wont necessarily be passed on to any offspring. besides half the genes will be from the female you breed him with.

The decision is up to you, but he doesnt sound necesarrily unhealthy, he has put on some weight and is feeding and hopefully the sheds will become better as he grows. i would at least give him a while to see if he improves before you make a decision.

i hope this helps,

Andy
