What could my monitor have passed from? there were no signs of death the eyes had sunk in a bit i was gone for maybe 3 hours before discovering him dead and he was 2 years old and very well taken care of...

That's a really broad question.  I would have to know what the parameters of the enclosure were as well as what the diet was.  In other words what was the heat at on the warm and cool side, what substrate was being used, was it wild caught or captive bred, was there water available, did you have a UVB light? Answering these questions will help me better ascertain what happened.
