Question
hello im and new to having a Chinese water dragon and my dragon has dug a hole all the way to the bottom of the tank and is just laying in it does this mean something? or is it just something they do?

Answer
Hi Paul,
He may just be hiding. Reptiles stress with new things and stress can cause them to hide, not eat, etc.  Try to keep his area as quiet as possible and free of other pets and human traffic so he has time to adjust.
Burying can also be due to being too hot.  Are you providing a large enough enclosure so that you are able to give him temperature zones?  They need a cool area, a mid temperature area (daytime) and a basking area(daytime).  If he doesn't have access to a cooler area and also a pond, he may be trying to cool himself off. Daytime temperatures need to range from about 84-88 mi with  a basking area that is in the low to mid 90's. Nightime temps can be in the mid 70's to low 80's.
Borrowing can also be a sign that he is too cold...
So you see..it's a guessing game and we need to check everything to see if we can find the cause and correct it.

If he is a baby, he should not be in anything less than a 50 gallon tank...and this will need to be changed before he is a year old.  They need lots of room!!

A good site on their care can be found at: http://www.triciaswaterdragon.com/  although it is a bit outdated on proper uvb lighting.
If he seems to be acting ok with eating, etc, and your temperatures are correct...then he is just doing what dragons do.
