Iguana Ursula - Follow Up

Question
QUESTION: Hey, this is Jess again.  Ursula saw the vet yesterday who confirmed my suspicions that she was severely malnourished and that she has MBD.  Also, he said that she has stomatitis and he gave me drops to put inside her mouth twice a day.  Any recommendations as to how to give her the drops without traumatizing either one of us?

Also, when I brought her back i noticed that her left eye was very weepy.  There had been a black spot on her lower eyelid in the morning and I just assumed that the vet removed it.  I called again today because both eyes looked weepy and he said to bring her in again.  What could be going on?

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Jess,

Well, that is good the vet did see her yesterday.  I am not surprised that she has MBD either.  Stomatitis is probably from a mouth injury that got infected.  Then, she couldn't fight off the infection because of malnutrition.
She may have a slight beginning of a respiratory infection or a piece of substrate from before you got her had scratched her eyes which irritated them.
You are not using a UVB yet, right?  It couldn't be a bad light.
Are they red & irritated?  Are they swollen at all?

QUESTION: I am using a UVB light . . . I just started it about 3 days ago.  Her eyes are not red or irritated . . . just weepy.  I have noticed her sneezing once or twice more than usual, but nothing much.  What can I do for a respiratory infection?  The vet gave me antibiotic drops for her eyes, but that's it.

ANSWER: Hello Jess,

Which UVB are you using again, it is a tube bulb?  What brand?
So she has eye ointment now, that is good.
A respiratory infection, if it is serious enough, will probably need an antibiotic for that if it doesn't improve.
Try getting some bee pollen to help with her immune system.  You can usually find that at a health food store pretty easily.  Maybe keep her a little warmer at night, around 80 or so.
Let me know how she is doing.

QUESTION: I'm using a bulb, not a tube.  I can't remember the brand name, but the woman who helped me at Petco said that it was a good bulb because it, "doesn't burn out as quickly."

Do I feed her the pollen?

She also does this thing when she's stressed - she will close her eyes and swallow very hard five or 6 times.  What's up with that?

Thanks again, Tracie!

Answer
Hello Jess,

Ok, exactly what type of light are you using, if the UVB is not a tube bulb but a regular bulb then you are using a mercury vapor bulb.  What is the brand?  Is it a Hagen Exoterra Solar Glo 125 watt?  I just want to make sure it is a safe brand.

You can just sprinkle the bee pollen on her food, no problem.

Well, when they get stressed they will push their beards or throats out like that.  It is just a behavior alot of reptiles do.

Let me know how she is doing.
