Question
Hi Dana once again.
Please could you tell me the best treatment for mites? The vet suggested frontline which I know is a definate NO NO as it killed one of my rabbits and it even states on the bottle do not give to rabbits.
I've heard ivomec is good but some say the inj solution for cattle some say the inj solution for swine (both given orally) but which one? and which % do I buy? I live in the UK by the way. Another person suggested Xeno spot on treatment, I have actulaay got the bob martins small animal spot on at home but will that be effective?
Also how long do I have to wait before treating as both buns just had their  myxi injection today?
Thanks
Trudy

Answer
Dear Trudy,

Definitely don't go back to the vet who suggested Frontline.  If he's not aware that it's not for rabbits, who knows what else he doesn't know about rabbit medicine?  Yikes!

The best treatment for mites we've found is selamectin, which goes by the brand name Stronghold (I'm pretty sure!) in the UK.  It's topical, and lasts for about 30 days.  Not sure if it has any interaction with the vaccine, but it would not hurt to wait a week or so, just to give them a chance to recover from the vaccine.  Ask your rabbit-savvy vet about this, to be sure to be safe.  You can find a good rabbit vet here:

I hope this will help your bunny.
