Nystatin Ingestion by Rabbit - Toxic??

22 9:47:02

Question
Hello. I have chronic Lyme and am on multiple abx daily, so I also take Nystatin daily. Unfortunately this week I dropped one tab of Nystatin on the floor and was unable to locate it despite lots of searching. I have 2 house rabbits, one of whom is a spunky troublemaker named Solstice. She was a rescue, but we believe she is a Lionhead cross (has the mane but conformation too big / Mini Rex cross and approx 1 1/2 years old. She is spayed and weighs 6 lbs. Usually VERY high energy and social. Tonight she refuses to eat, won't go to her cage for bedtime (we cage her when we're asleep since she gets into mischief - our other bun stays out all times). She is "hiding" in a cardboard box and won't come out when called by name (she always does) and refuses papaya treats. She's also shifting away when I pet her. Because of the time at night, I thought I would write you for advice. If you think this is serious I will bring her to her vet tomorrow. Do you know if Nystatin is safe for rabbits?? Could her prob be related to that or something else entirely? I am so worried. Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Hi Karen,

Honestly I don't know if Nystatin is toxic to rabbits.  Chances are that if is a dose for a full grown human even if it isn't toxic at normal doses the dose we would take would be much larger.  Obviously you are doing the right thing by getting her to the vet.  In the meantime you might want to start force feeding her.

I wish I could be of more help.
