Lonely rabbit & mites

Question
My neutered 7 year old Dwarf lop has been increasingly grumpy since his bonded female companion died from myxomatosis in november time. He also caught a secondary form of myxomatosis but as he had been vaccinated he managed to recover. Now, several weeks after his recovery, he has very dry skin and fur loss along his back along with severe dandruff. His behaviour seems otherwise fine.
I am using spot on treatment along with tea tree cream to soothe itching and am taking him to the vet next week, but was wondering if you have any suggestion for treating him in the mean time? Would bathing him with a certain shampoo help?

Also, when he is fully recovered, what aged female would be best if i choose to get another companion for him?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Charlotte,

We use advantage multi for mites and it is relatively cheap and very easy to use.  It has to be advantage as some of the other parasite treatments for cats and dogs are dangerous for rabbits.  I do not recommend bathing him.  Rabbits don't like to be bathed and it could cause him to injure himself or even die from stress.

I would recommend an adult bunny and I recommend that you find one at a shelter.  Most shelters allow you to bring your current bunny and let him choose his mate.  When people are adopting our bunnies we strongly suggest that they bring their current rabbit and we see which one the bunny bonds to.  Some rabbits fall in love instantly and some will never get a long.  It is best to know before you bring home another rabbit.

Good luck

Pam
