QuestionI rescued a young female rabbit from a family member, who wasn't looking after her properly. I've been grooming her every few days as she has a lot of dandruff, but I've noticed (today) that she has what looks like the cradle cap my son had as a baby. I've been using a bristle brush and a fine tooth comb, and a damp cloth, to 'polish' her coat. Where she has this 'scurf', there is no fur. Can I massage a little oil into her skin, like I did with my son?
AnswerThere are several things that could be. It could be a skin infection, it could be skin mites, or it could be ringworm. I hope that you are washing your hands after handing her.
I wouldn't massage in the oil, but rather take her to a rabbit-knowledgeable vet to determine exactly what skin condition she has.
Mites are not transmittable to humans, but ringworm is.
