Question
I own a  female dwarf rabbit that is a little over five years old. She has lived outside in a hut with an exception of cold winter days when we move her hut into the garage. As I went to feed her yesterday morning I noticed something wasn't quite right. She was trembling slightly, very weak, and having issues using her back legs.
She was taken to the vet right away who seems to think she has something wrong with her spine. Its not fractured, but there is the possibility of a small tumor. He gave her a shot for swelling incase that's all it is. He also gave her an IV to hydrate her. He let us know that if the shot wasn't working within 48 hours we would most likely have to put her to sleep.
I have been watching her since then, we have her set up in our living room. She has no issue eating, but wont drink much, even with the dropper we were given to use. She mostly lays on her side with her feet out. She can move around a little but has trouble getting up and still wobbles and trembles.
I guess my question is if there is another possibility besides a tumor? can I do anything to help? and would it be inhumane to keep her alive if shes not in any pain? Are there any other possible treatments? It just seems like putting her down would be like giving up.

Answer
Dear Hannah,

There are many possible causes for hind limb paresis, and you must read this article immediately:

Share the linked article by Dr. Susan Brown with your vet.  The condition might not be reversible, but it could be arrested, and she can live a completely happy life inside with you as a special needs bunny.  Please see the articles here for more information:

I hope this helps.
