Baby rabbit near death

Question
Hi,

We found a baby rabbit (under a car) over 10 days old as eyes are open, when we went to remove him we found he was still breathing although not by much.  (There seems to be no external injuries)Fully expected him to die within the hour so we put him in a box with a warm towel.  After 8 hours and he is still alive.  We have given him a small eye dropper of KMR (kitten milk).  Not moving other than to gasp.  Is there anything else we can do to keep him comfortable.  How long can he hang on like this?  Is there anything else we can do for him?

Thank you

Answer
Dear Heather,

When a baby is in condition this bad, you've done pretty much what can be done at home.  The only other thing I'd suggest is to get him to a good rabbit vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

for subcutaneous fluids and, possibly, antibiotics (Baytril).  But since there's no easy way to know what's wrong without diagnostic tests, keeping him warm and hydrated is the kindest thing.

I hope you have time to get him to a vet, but if not, please take comfort that you have given him comfort and safety even in his last hours.

Take care,

Dana
