Question
I just got a grass mat for bunnys cage. he would rather eat it than lay on it. I cant find out what kind of grass its made of all mfg says it 100% natural. its made in china and im worried if its safe for the bun to eat and play with?

Answer
Dear Mike,

The grasses themselves are probably not harmful. But given China's history of dangerous products, I'm not sure I'd trust them either.  Most grass mats are fumigated with pesticide before being exported, and the gas dissipates before they reach the market.  But there's no guarantee that the grasses were not cultivated with unknown pesticides that have left residues.

Also, if the mats were sewn together with synthetic (usually polyester) string, these could be dangerous for buns to chew.

I would try to seek woven grass products from a reputable company such as Oxbow Hay Company or American Pet Diner, or any number of online sources for rabbit products and toys.  I guess it's better to err on the side of caution.

Hope this helps.
