Dutch Lost Sister/Bondmate Worried About Her

22 10:02:18

Question
I recently lost my 6 year Dutch runt Milly. According to the vet it had been natural causes, though he wasn't specific but I suspect this was more of him trying to consol me. She had been normal the evening before, but had passed away with by the afternoon the next day. While it seems her bondmate, a sister from her same little, is taking her death better than I am (still eating/drinking, wanting pets, and destroying toys) I'm worried she might get depressed over the loss of Milly. Milly was always rather small for her breed, being about half the size of her sister. What can I do to cheer her sister up? I'm afraid to bring home a new mate for her at her age as she was always a quite please-don't-hold-me kind of rabbit; she's always prefered pets over holding. Both rabbits are/were spayed.

Answer
Dear Machell

I am sorry about the loss of your bunny.  To make sure Milly's sister stays well, give her lots of love and attention.  She is no doubt missing her sister, and I hope she was able to say goodbye to the body, which will let her know what happened and give her closure.

Eventually, you may wish to contact your local rabbit rescuer here:

to set up some "blind dates" with eligible, adoptable bachelor bunnies, and let her choose her own mate.  This will have a much better result than your bringing home a "surprise", which would likely end in bloodshed and disaster.  Bunnies are very choosy about their companions, and territorial.  It's important to let them pick their own.  The fosterer/rescuer can help you determine who's the best match and best potential for long-term bliss.

I hope this helps.
