Question
QUESTION: I have been feeding my rabbit Wild Harvest pellets for two years and I have just RECENTLY found out that Wild Harvest is very bad for them.
I have found other brand of plain pellets that are perfect, but my question is, how do I change the brand of his diet without upsetting his stomach? He has been eating Wild Harvest since he was baby.

ANSWER: If you still have the Wild Harvest pellets, you can mix the new pellets with the old pellets.  At first, just add a little bit of the new pellets. With each feeding, add a bit more of the new pellets until it's all the new feed.  This way, your rabbit's system can gradually adjust to the new feed.

QUESTION: But, my bunny loves the dried fruit and seeds in it, which is bad for rabbits. He mostly eat those, how can I get him off those to eating only plain Timothy Hay pellets?
ANSWER: Oh yes, they certainly do love that stuff.  Will he eat any of the timothy pellets at all?  You could also try an intermediate feed of alfalfa pellets (no seeds, fruit, etc).    Or if you can find it, there's a banana scented alfalfa feed that you could try as an intermediate feed.  You could also try Kaytee Rainbow Exact. It's also alfalfa, but lots of rabbits will go for it. Or you may have to try another timothy brand.  Some rabbits are really tough to switch over to another feed.  I've had some rabbits where it took quite some time and experimenting to finally get them over to a Timothy pellet.

QUESTION: So I should feed him alfalfa pellets? I thought those wre only meant for baby bunnies, I am going to try switching him over slowly though.
But, like if he doesn't switch over to timothy hay, I should give him alfalfa hay pellets?

Answer
Alfalfa is only for young or sick rabbits.  You are correct that timothy is the best.  I'm just recommending the alfalfa as a bridge to the timothy if he doesn't like the timothy right away.  So, if you switch him over slowly, he might adjust to the timothy fine.  If he refuses to eat the timothy at all, you can try another brand of timothy (if you can find one).  Oxbow is a good brand.  But, alfalfa would be the second choice.  Either way, you're taking the right step in slowly moving him off of what I call "McDonalds" food.
