Question
Hi,

I have a Angora rabbit with two pieces of pinkish flesh close to his irises in both eyes. First off; Is that pea-eye? My mom says it is but I'm not sure. Second; is it serious? I haven't had a rabbit for long and a little inexperienced. And Lastly; What do I do

Answer
Dear Ray,

Without seeing the eyes, I cannot tell you if your bunny has "pea eye" (a term meant to describe a congenital swelling of the pink part of the eye, or conjunctiva) or not.  What you describe also could fit the third eyelid, or nictans, which is normal, though it should not always show.

If you can take a very clear, closeup picture, I will be able to help you if you can attach it here.

If in doubt, you can get your bunny to a good rabbit vet, finding one here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

Note that "pea eye" is a congenital (i.e., the bunny is born with it) condition.  So if this is something that just now showed up in a young or adult rabbit, you should take him to the vet to be sure this isn't something indicating a health problem that needs medical treatment.

Hope this helps.
