Question
one of my friends is trying to get me a little brown floppy eared bunny. I dont think my dad will allow it. if i ask him i know for sure he'll say no. but if i take good care of it maybe it wont be so bad.
so I was wondering if you had any tips on proper care and feeding. stuff like that. and common problems that i'll definetly come across sometime. My family is on a budget though. hosptial bills sinced i was found with tumors. anyway. i only mentioned that because i dont think i'll be able to have access to a vet.
the nearest one is kinda far from where i live. so would you recommend me getting one with that ^ problem? would it really be necessary? or do you know of any sites that help with this sort of thing? thanks in advance.

Answer
Dear Eve,

Your friend may mean well, but it sounds as if this might not be a good time in your life for a pet as high maintenance as a rabbit.  Rabbits require as much care and attention as a dog or cat, and need lots of space to run.  They also need regular veterinary care, and unfortunately, the floppy eared types seem more prone to health problems than other types of rabbits.

Before you decide to get a bunny, please read all the information on diet, housing, how to tell if a bunny is sick, etc. here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/rabbithealth.html

and what to expect from your first rabbit here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/firstrabbit.html

You can find all the information you'll ever need about veterinary care, housing, food, etc. at the House Rabbit Society web site at  www.rabbit.org

Hope that helps.  Please write back if you have any other questions.
