new pet rabbit: Hay box is the litterbox!

Question
So I've just recently been well, given a little (5-9 weeks old) lionhead lop and she goes to the bathroom in her alfalfa hay (not her pellets). I'm sure that it's not the healthiest thing, it's kind of nasty so how can I get her to stop? My mother has a few out of the same litter and they have done the same?

Answer
Dear Jasmin,

The best solution is to fill her litterbox with pelleted sawdust litter, such as Feline Pine, and cover it with a thin layer of soft hay, then pile up a big pile in the corner for her to eat.

The urine and poop will be deodorized by the pelleted litter, and she can sit in her "toilet" and munch her hay (replace the eating pile daily!) to her heart's content without having a disgusting mess of urine-soaked hay in her hay box.

So just replace the litterbox with a litter/hay box and also replace her *hay* box with a litter/hay box, and you have solved the problem.

It's not harmful for a bunny to sit in her litterbox and eat hay, as long as there is an absorbent material underneath to keep things clean.

Hope that helps.
