Question
My 1 and a half year old male rabbit was castrated about 6months ago.  We have had no problems since but while cleaning him I found two slits, about 1cm long, below where his testicles were, at either side of his anus.  There seems to be a smell from the two cuts and they look as if they have faeces in them!  I don't know if this is part of his anus or if the slits were from the castration.  Can you please help.
Thanks

Answer
Dear Lynsey,

You have found his scent gland pockets.  The brown material in the pockets is a waxy musk that will be less waxy and more solid now that he's neutered.  We occasionally check the pockets to be sure they're not impacted with hardened "musk guck", and if they are, we use a cottonball and a bit of vegetable oil to gently tease it out.

What you see is normal, and nothing to worry about.

Hope that helps.

Dana
