QuestionI've had my lop bunny for about 2 weeks, he's about 1 month old. He normally has lots of energy, and has become more used to my place, his cage, and the people surrounding him. For the past couple of days though, I've noticed he has less energy. He'll still jump and "dance" and explore, but a lot of times he lies down, takes long naps, and doesn't want to be bothered. He's still eating and drinking, so I'm not too concerned. I'm just wondering if him being less excited than before is part of the normal process of adaptation. Thanks!
AnswerDear Andrea,
If you're serious that you acquired this bunny at the age of two weeks, then he could have a serious health problem. A rabbit should NEVER be removed from his mother before the age of 8 weeks, or fatal intestinal problems can result. Please read this immediately:
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/poop.html
and please get him to a good rabbit vet:
www.rabbit.org/vets
ASAP. It is not normal for him to lose energy, and I fear that he may be about to "crash and burn." If you see *any* sign of runny stool, it is a life-threatening emergency that must be seen by a vet IMMEDIATELY.
I'm glad you're vigilant and concerned enough to ask this question, as many people would not worry until it was too late. A one month old bunny is much too young to be weaned, and he will require special care to survive. DO NOT attempt to give him milk formula. That will just make things worse. But the vet will be able to determine whether he needs subcutaneous fluids (if he's such a little baby, he is probably not drinking enough). Check his diet here:

Please write back if you have any questions or if you see any other sign of abnormal behavior that can signal a very serious health problem in such a tiny baby.
