Question
my rabbit has a creamy discharge with what looks to be small grains of rice in it i think he may also be emanciated i will get him to a vet in the morning i just wanted to know what could cause the discharge in his rear

Answer
It sounds like your rabbit may have an internal parasite.  They can get worms just from eating fresh hay or playing out in the grass, or from other rabbits of course.  Normally rabbits that have internal parasites do look emaciated, almost like they are starving to death even though you know you are feeding them and they are eating.  The good news is that there is medication to fix it and it is very safe.

The most important thing is to not get to nervous.  A good exotic animal vet will certainly be able to diagnose and treat the illness.  Once it is treated he should regain his normal weight and thrive again.

I am assuming you are referring to discharge from the anal area and not the penis.  If it is from the penis he could have an infection but again only a vet can diagnose this.

Your vet will most likely want to do a stool sample and culture.  If possible bag up some of his morning fecal pellets to take along with you.  They are good for 12 hours and it can save a lot of time attempting to get a fecal sample while at the vet.

I hope your bunny is ok.  If you have any further questions please let me know.

Sincerely,

Pam
