Question
hello,
my 1 and half yr old holland lop doesnt care much for any chewing toys i buy
her but does enjoy chewing/eating the pages of books/newspapers. i usually
take it away because i didnt think that could be good for her. however, after
doing some research i saw that you can give a rabbit a phone book to chew
on and i was wondering how much is too much? i feel bad because shes my
only rabbit and im at school all day and if she doesnt like any toys (or hay)
this is the only fun thing she can do to pass time. and i understand chewing
is good to keep their teeth from overgrowing but is newspaper that effective?
(compared to wood blocks which she wont touch)
any info would be great.
thank you

Answer
Rabbits can be real picky when it comes to their toys.  It can be a bit of trial and error until you figure out what they like.

Phone books are fabulous toys for rabbits.  Most phone books use a vegetable based ink.  I always have them available for my rabbits and have never seen any problem.  Mine do more shredding than eating of it.

Newspaper probably isn't effective for keeping her teeth down.  In the 10 years that I've had rabbits, not a single one would use a wooden chew toy.

What I've found most effective are bunny safe baskets.  My rabbits love them.  I buy rabbit safe ones from Bunny Bytes.

Other online rabbit stores sell them also.  You can also buy other things made out of the same material as the baskets they sell.

If you can find untreated wicker baskets without any staples or nails in them, they would probably cost less than what the online rabbit stores charge.

You can also try branches from an apple tree.

Ideas for overall good toys can be found here:

Keep trying and I'm sure you'll find something
