Question
Can tea tree oil be used on pigs?
I was considering using it in a salve in conjunction with neem oil for fly bites on my pig.  Neem oil smells so bad, and tea tree oil has a strong scent, that isn't so bad.
Also what can be done to keep the flys off my pot bellied pig especially his ears.

Answer
Any insect repellent can be used on pigs. There's products available specifically for livestock, like pigs, horses, etc. Your local feed store can order them, or try Valley Vet Supply ( www.valleyvet.com ) or Jeffers ( http://www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/ ) on line. Many people with just one or two potbellied pigs use ordinary human insect repellent.

My pigs do not like to be squirted, so I use lotion insect repellents on their ears.

You can use tea tree oil salve on the fly bites. Bag Balm is also very good and highly recommended. In a pinch, you can also use any skin ointment made for humans.

Pig and human skin is so much alike that pig skin is often grafted onto people with severe burns to help them heal. Most human products are tested on pigs and other animals. Pigs do not lick themselves the way dogs and cats do, so there's no danger of a pig eating an ointment off their skin, as there is with dogs and cats. So skin products for humans are safe to use on pigs, but not on dogs or cats.
