does my outdoor pig need a friend?

Question
My 2 yr old female pot belly is outdoors, she shares a pen with my donkey (they get along reasonably well but generally  keep to themselves). She has a separate house where she sleeps. I have been thinking about getting her a buddy is this a good idea or not? I am thinking another female as I don't want any babies. My  pig is not fixed yet but I will probably be getting it done this summer.

Answer
Each pig is a unique individual. Most pigs are happier in a herd, but some are fine by themselves.

Pigs have a strict social order. It's like a ladder and each pig has a rung. So when two new pigs are introduced, they will fight to decide who is top pig. If one pig is more assertive than the other, or one pig is still a piglet, the fighting will be over quickly. With an adult pig and a piglet, it's pretty clear to both pig and piglet that the pig will be the boss - for now. When the piglet reaches age 2 or 3 they may squabble again, and the younger pig may become top hog. If both pigs are adults, and both pigs are fairly assertive, the fighting will last longer, and they might try to bite each others ears.

These fights are usually harder on the people than on the pigs. To the pigs, this is the natural way of choosing a leader. To people, it looks painful and unpleasant.

Once they've decided who is top pig, they will probably bond quite closely. Pigs kept in herds often break up into small groups of two or three close "friends".

Rescues and sanctuaries often take in pregnant pigs, and have piglets available for adoption. The Pig Placement Network has a database of pigs available for adoption, and a list of rescues and sanctuaries at  pigplacementnetwork.com
