Pot belly pig color change

Question
I help run a feed store.  A customer came in asking about her pot bellied pig.  She said the mother of this pig died when it was 14 years from her skin turning color in a white circle on the belly that moved up to the top changing the hair and skin color to white.  When the color changing ring made it to the top the pig died.  Now the daughter pig is begining to do the same thing at age 9 years.  Any ideas on what this could be?  I asked if it was a mite or a possible fungus and they said no.
Thanks.

Answer
It isn't unusual for black pigs to develop white markings, or even turn almost completely white. Some even turn mostly white, then back to black.

Virtually all pot-bellied pigs in the US are a mixture of several different strains of small Asian pigs. Most wild piglets are born one color, and change to their adult color as they grow. It's probably a combination of these two factors that causes pigs to change color.

The older pigs death probably had nothing to do with the color change. Pigs do get skin cancers, but these would be obvious lumps, warts or wounds, not a color change. A 14 year old pig is a senior citizen, and about the average lifespan for a well cared for piggy.
