Question
hey, i have a pig thats my sister gave me and its almost a year old he is very cute and likes to lick me and give kisses but sometimes when he hears me he will make an ear pearcing squeel does that mean he is really hungry or something, also he will purr when my dogs bark or when someone talks, does that mean he is scared? and when i hold him and has a consistant low chirp what does that mean.

also when i hold him he is great until he will pee or poop i know he has a small bladder and cant help it, but is there anyway i can train him not to go to the bathroom on me when i hold him or do stores sell some kind of diaper for them ?
thanks

Answer
Hello Lauren and thanks for the questions,

Guinea Pig sounds are cool aren't they? There are many differing schools of thought as to what they all "mean" but I will give you my opinion on yours...

Keeping in mind that you have to interpret the sound AND the situation you hear it in I feel this way about your questions.

The squeal or "weet" when he hears your voice is completely happy and excited. He wats pet or a treat or some other affection.

The "purring" is more like a growl in this case. It means he is not happy or scared. A GP will do this when presented with a life-threatening situation. Keep in mind dogs are more of a threat to the rodentia family GP than cats and are their natural enemies. A GP will "click" or "chatter" his teeth when confronting another GP for superiority or mating. If you haven't heard this yet that is good. The sound when you hold him is calm and content.

If you want him to stop peeing or pooping on you when you hold him, you can do two things. Give him a break every few minutes to do his business OR flick him in the nose or spray him in the face with water when he DOES pee or poop. Then put him back in his pen. He will learn that when it is time to pee/poop he should tell you by nipping at you or leaving your lap. When he does this correctly, reward him.

Thanks and have fun. I sounds like you are truly having the best GP experience.
