Question
I have a pig that i rescued from a pet store. there were going to put her to sleep because she had an abscess and she was pregnant. i flushed her abscess every day, now that is completley healed. she gave birth early this morning to 3 pups. one pup still has the umbilical cord and some thing else attatched. the mom has some blood left on her vagina and there is some in the cage. other than that everything looks ok, but i have alot of questions. can i touch them?, can i clean the cage?how often should she be nursing?, does she need to sit on them all the time?, do they drink from her water bottle?,the babies have a rough looking coat and the mom is smooth coated. will their coats smooth out or are the just rough coated?, should i bring them to the vet for an exam or is it too tramatic (its also about 10 degrees out side now), and i also wanted to know if you had any advice on sexing them. thank you so much, i really appreciate it and so does Sweet Potato!

Answer
Hello, first of all congratulations on having 3 new babies!  Now to answer your questions.  1. you can touch them any time you want, the mother will not turn on the babies. 2. you can clean the cage after about 5 - 7 days. 3. she should be nursing several times a day. 4. yes she needs to sit on them for the first few days because they have poor circulation for the first few days, when they start walking she will sit on them less and less.  5. they can drink from a water bottle but they probably need to be showed how yo use it, that is where you come in.  6. It is possible that the father was rough coated and that is the dominate gene, no worries. 7.  There is no need to bring them to the vet is you see nothing wrong with them (missing teeth, limbs, eyes, etc.) 8. there is a website that i used when i bred my guineas for sexing. it is http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm
good luck with your guineas and just remember that when the males are 3 -4 weeks old they can impregnate their mother and that is very bad.  I would reccomend tht you get the male nutered or the mother spayed if you wish to cage them together.
Best of luck
