Hi, I have been watching my guineapig very closely i got him in March of this year after my very first guinea pig had died from mites which he got from the pet store. My new guinea pig (Lucky) is loosing patches of hair (from his back only) he gets irritated very easily but yet he still gets excited and tries to play with the other animals in my house, he is eating and drinking just like you could expect a little piggy to. He gets oranges and lots of alfalfa every day. He has open scabs on his back and I have been puting peatree oil spray on it like the guy at petsmart recomended. Lucky is not acting like he did when I first got him but i know he does not have mites because he hasn't been around any other guinea pigs and he is not showing any symptoms other than hairloss. Is he doing this because he is lonely and needs a friend/mate could you please help me any suggestions would be usefull I am willing to try anything within a reasonable cost range.
    Thank you sincerly,

I need a little more information before I can even guess what is wrong.  In what shape is he losing hair?  Is it round, triangular, or just patchy (which means its not in any particular shape)?  If you could let me know, I would be happy to help you.

Thanks!
Lorena

 Lorena,
He is just losing his hair in patches (no particular shape) I have noticed that his scabs have started going away but I also noticed that he is starting to loose more hair. I was also wondering if it has something to do with his rosettes because it seems like that is where he is loosing hair at the most. Like he losses it at the bottom (starting at the skin) is where I notice the most hairloss and skin scabbing.

Well, there are couple of reasons he could be losing hair.  The good news is that the animal probably does not have selnick mites nor ringworm.  However, I would still take him to the vet -- quite a few of the things which can cause hair loss are serious.  Find a reputable vet and have him checked out.

Sorry this probably isn't the news you wanted, but I hope it helps.  Good luck!
