Blind and deaf Guinea Pig

Question
I recently adopted a 6 week old white Guinea Pig that I was told was blind and deaf and had no bottom front teeth - but was very healthy otherwise.  They were going to put him to sleep and I couldnt allow that to happen.  I adopted him and took him to the Vet the next day and it was confirmed that he is totally deaf and has only slight vision in his right eye.

I need to know of special ways that might help in training him not to be so scared when someone or something suddenly touches him.  Right now I let him sniff my hand first, but even that will make him jump like a rabbit in fear (Im afraid one day he will fall or hurt himself), he doesnt like to be held or fed by hand.

Is this the way he will always be, or is there ways that I can work with him to make him calmer and less afraid of everything?

Your help, information and advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Answer
Hello M and thanks for the question,

You are to be commended for your charity in taking in this little guy. If this is a young GP, you can treat/train him as normal. The way you described him was as "young". He does not know that he has anything wrong with him and his instincts will be normal.

Browsing my other answered questions will help you with my method of GP training. To paraphrase, I act normal around my GPs so they get "untrained" about being timid. Normal noises (vacuum, radio, tv, computer) and petting with treats helps the GP get used to you, your home and his new enviroment. Showing him he has nothing to fear makes for a great pet who is very active and fun.

I hope that you enjoy my other questions.

Thanks and have a nice day,
Ryan
