Hurt toe

Question
I was clipping my piggy's hind feet when I noticed the that one of her toes had a very thick toe nail. I clipped it, but it was a very difficult process-- she squirmed much more than usual and tried very hard to keep her foot from me. She had red and purple spot where the nail met her skin and upon further investigation, I realized that she favors her other hind foot and that she often lays to one side to avoid the injured toe.
My sister thinks her toe is just bruised, but I am not sure. What is wrong with her and how can I help?

Thank You!

Answer
Hi Cori

This is one of those times where I wish I could see your pig to give you a better answer.

From what you tell me, it sounds like your pig has the early stages of pododermatitis, or bumblefoot. This is where the foot becomes swelled, and although the problem appear to be on one toe, it gradually spreads to the whole foot.

The only known cure for this condition is the drug Griseofulvin which can only be obtained from your vet, so I would take your piggy to the vet for a diagnosis, although personally, I can't think what else the problem could be apart from perhaps a minor injury.

If the problem is pododermatitis then dont worry, its not a serious condition once diagnosed, just uncomfortable for your piggy.

Good luck

Andy
